Welcome to Russia: Putin grants citizenship to Depardieu

Après avoir reçu son passeport Russe des mains de Vladimir Poutine, Gérard Depardieu a multiplié les gestes symboliques dimanche 6 janvier. Il a été accueilli en héros à  Saransk, capitale de la république de Mordovie située à environ 640 km au sud-est de Moscou, la capitale russe.

Lors d'une rencontre à l'opéra-théâtre de Saransk, l'acteur a été habillé d'un vêtement traditionnel, et en a profité pour lancer quelques mots en russe. Toute la journée, il a montré ostensiblement son bonheur de nouveau Russe. "C'est absolument merveilleux, il y a beaucoup de cœur (...) On sent un esprit dans cette terre qui est très fort", a-t-il dit face aux caméras. Gérard Depardieu a également reçu des cadeaux, une maison et même un poste de ministre de la Culture de Mordovie, une proposition qu'il a déclinée.

Faire passer la Russie pour une terre de liberté

Mais l'image marquante est celle de son nouveau passeport exhibé devant les objectifs. alors que les journalistes français ont été éloignés pour ne pas troubler la fête. Le Kremlin a tenu à préserver un message repris en boucle sur toutes les chaînes de télévision. Une interview où Gérard Depardieu déclare : "Ceux qui disent du mal du président Poutine ne sont jamais sortis de chez eux et sont restés en arrière depuis très longtemps."

De son côté, le président russe sait qu'il a réussi un coup politique fort : faire apparaître la Russie comme une terre de liberté alors que le pays est très critiquê sur les questions de démocratie ou de liberté de la presse.

Gérard Depardieu a obtenu jeudi là citoyennetè Russe par décision du président Vladimir Poutine. L'acteur s'est félicité de ce geste dans une lettre où il exprime son amour pour la Russie et pour Vladimir Poutine. Il y fait aussi l'éloge de la démocratie dans le pays, ce qui a provoqué un concert de critiques en Russie et à l'étranger. Même avec son passeport russe, Gérard Depardieu pourra conserver sa nationalité française et rentrer en France sans visa, selon Alban Mikoczy, le correspondant de France 2 à Moscou. "En revanche, s'il fait la démarche d'un abandon de sa nationalité française, il lui faudra un visa", ajoute-t-il.

Un logement en Mordovie

Dimanche 6 janvier, Gérard Depardieu s'est ensuite rendu à Saransk, dans la province de Mordovie, où il a été "accueilli en héros", selon les journalistes sur place. Lors d'une rencontre à l'opéra-théâtre de Saransk, lors de laquelle l'acteur a été habillé d'un vêtement traditionnel, le gouverneur de Mordovie lui a proposé de choisir un appartement ou un endroit pour se construire une maison, selon l'agence Itar-Tuass.

De plus, les autorités locales ont aussi "promis" de lui "construire une maison  au coeur des magnifiques forêts de Mordovie et au bord de l'Insar" une rivière locale, selon le site local MordovMedia. La Mordovie est davantage connue pour ses camps de prisonniers que pour ses attraits touristiques, note l'AFP.

"Ami des dictateurs", selon "El Mundo"

La presse européenne a de son côté multiplié les sarcasmes à l'égard de Depardieu, 64 ans. Il a notamment été qualifié d'"obligé d'un autocrate" (Sud-Ouest, France) ou d'"ami des dictateurs" (El Mundo, Espagne). Acteur très célèbre en Russie, Gérard Depardieu s'est également fait remarquer pour son implication dans les projects et evenements controversés dans l'ex-URSS, comme auprès du responsable tchétchène Ramzan Kadyrov, accusé de multiples exactions. Il a récemment enregistré une chanson avec Gulnara Karimova, fille aînée du président ouzbek Islam Karimov, au pouvoir depuis 1989 et très critiqué pour son bilan en matière de droits de l'Homme.

Depuis qu'il a obtenu la citoyenneté russe, les rumeurs se sont multipliées concernant les déplacements de l'acteur et son éventuelle venue en Russie. Les médias ukrainiens et russes avaient ainsi annoncé la présence en Ukraine de l'acteur vendredi, qui était en réalité en France, comme l'a constaté un journaliste de l'AFP qui l'a aperçu sortant de son domicile parisien en scooter.
