Left behind children with foreign passports

"Left-behind children" usually refers to those left by their migrant worker parents in rural areas of China. The grandparents look after them while the parents work in urban areas, far from home, to make a living. In East China’s Fujian Province, there’s a special group of such children. They are called the "foreign left-behind children."
4 year old Liu Yuanxin is no different from any other Chinese boy his age, except that he has an English name, Eddie, and a US passport. Born in America, he was sent back to China when he was only 3 months old. His mom works around the clock in a Chinese restaurant and couldn’t take care of him. He has lived with his aunt in Guantou, Fujian Province since then.
"Do you miss your mom?"
"Yes."
"Do you want her to come back?"
"Yes."
"What do you want to do with her?"
"Watch TV."
Eddie’s mom gives him as much as she can. But there is still something that she can’t provide that the little boy is longing for.
LIU lIQIN, Aunt, said, I"His mom came back and visited us this September. When Eddie saw the suitcase the morning she left, he tried to stop her from packing and cried for a long time."
Like Eddie, 80 percents of kids in this kindergarten hold foreign passports. They are taken care of by grandparents or relatives before going back and living with parents to continue their education at age 4 or 5. But nice preschools and family care can’t replace the absence of parental interaction.
Jiang Huizhen, Principal Jinbei's Er Kindergarten, said, "Grandparents are more likely to spoil children and there is a lack of discipline. We have to tell them not to do things, and help the children become more independent. Grandparents can’t form the same kind of attachments as those between parents and children, no matter how hard they try."
The coastal town has seen a trend of emigration since the 1980s. Over 40,000 villagers out of the 56,000 population work overseas. Their long working hours gives them no choice but to send their children back to China for family members to look after.
Ni Falin, Chairman of Guantou Fed. of Returned Overseas Chinese, said, "There are about 2000 left behind Children with foreign nationalities in this town. We see some 200 kids come and go every year. It is hard for both the children and their parents, but it seems the best choice for the family’s future. Young parents can work very hard and fulfill their dreams while knowing their kids are being taken care of well."
This belief makes families like Eddie’s think the separation is worth it.
"Unlike other children left behind by migrant worker parents in rural China, these kids with foreign nationalities live a very comfortable life and are never short of expensive toys and clothes. But it is still hard for their material abundance to make up for the absence in their childhood, the care that is thousands of miles away.

1st Yangtze-crossing subway opens in Wuhan

China’s first under-river subway line crossing the Yangtze River has opened in Wuhan, capital of central Hubei province.
It takes three minutes to pass through a 27 kilometer tunnel that links Wuchang and Hankou, two major urban areas in Wuhan. Trains started operating on Friday morning at a speed of 80 kilometers per hour. The line took six years to construct and another three months of passenger-less test runs. It is expected to carry 5-hundred thousand passengers daily, with 26 trains scheduled to run every six minutes.
The 63 hundred kilometer Yangtze River, which flows from northwest China’s Qinghai province through 10 provinces and municipalities before reaching the East China Sea, is a major transport link between west and east China.

Cats, an award-winning musical by British composer Andrew Lloyd Webber, is captivating Beijing audiences with a Chinese version. After its premiere in Shanghai in August 2012, the musical toured cities including Guangzhou and Chongqing, and now celebrates its 100th show in Beijing.
The world renowned musical was composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber and is based on the "Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats" by T. S. Eliot. It first opened in London’s West End in 1981. It has since been performed around the world many times and translated into more than 20 languages.
The show tells the story of a tribe of cats called the Jellicles and the night they make "the Jellicle choice", which is when they decide which cat will ascend the Heaviside Layer and come back to a new life.
Lloyd Webber’s eclecticism is very strong here; musical genres range from classical to pop, music hall, jazz, rock and electro-acoustic music as well as hymnal songs.
To cater to local tastes, some songs were performed in a Beijing dialect. In terms of stage design, the director has incorporated Beijing elements as well, such as bird cages and Peking duck.
The musical has attracted scores of viewers, among which are many stars.
Actor Han Tongsheng said, "The musical is intriguing. Both the dancing and singing were beyond what I imagined."
Actor Huang Bo said, "It’s very impressive that we can translate such a renowned Broadway musical so well."
The mandarin "Cats" is being shown at the Century Theatre in Beijing until February 3rd, 2013.

Yu Feng, art director of China National Opera House, said, "There are many folk art elements in the performance, which produces a better understanding of different folk art styles."
Mr. Yu says cooperation between local performing troupes aims to better preserve and promote local art and culture.
Also in Beijing, the curtain has opened on a performance called the "Tree of Life". Performed by Ukrainian band "The Heavenly River", as their name suggests, their particular style of what’s been dubbed "oriental music" is peaceful and harmonious. Singer, Sanjay Talwar, also joined the performance, adding an Indian element to the repertoire.

"The Last Tycoon" ready for 2013 release

Chow Yun-fat is returning to the big screen with a new movie, "The Last Tycoon". Directed by Wong Jing and produced by Andrew Lau, the movie tells the story of a local hero whose gang empire ruled Shanghai in the 1930s. A newly released trailer provides us a glimpse of the movie.
In the new film "The Last Tycoon," Chow Yun-fat will once again be wielding a gun.
Chow is revisiting a storyline that’s similar to the hit television period drama "The Bund" that gave him his first taste of stardom in the 1980s. Like "The Bund", the story of "The Last Tycoon," set in turn of the century China, is about the rise of an infamous Chinese mafia in Shanghai.
Directed by Wong Jing and produced by Andrew Lau, The Last Tycoon revolves around the life of a crime boss, Du Yuesheng, who built his empire in Shanghai, and chronicles his power struggles between influential local figures. Chow plays Du Yuesheng and Chinese actor Huang Xiaoming plays the younger version of Chow’s character.
Huang also has a strong connection to the storyline. In 2006, in the remake of "The Bund" television drama, Huang played the same character as Chow, a role which propelled his career to a new level.
Huang said it is a true dream come true to be in the same film as Chow, as the veteran actor has always been one of his idols.

Directed by Wong Jing and produced by Andrew Lau, The Last Tycoon revolves around the life of a crime boss, Du Yuesheng, who built his empire in Shanghai, and chronicles his power struggles between influential local figures. Chow plays Du Yuesheng and Chinese actor Huang Xiaoming plays the younger version of Chow’s character.
Huang also has a strong connection to the storyline. In 2006, in the remake of "The Bund" television drama, Huang played the same character as Chow, a role which propelled his career to a new level.
Huang said it is a true dream come true to be in the same film as Chow, as the veteran actor has always been one of his idols.
"The Last Tycoon" is set for release in Chinese mainland and Hong Kong on January 3rd.
